Dolly Parton hade beslutat sig för att sluta på Porter Wagoners TV-show. De hade jobbat tillsammans i 7 år men nu hade Dolly bestämt sig för att gå vidare. Dolly hade dåligt samvete för detta så hon skrev en låt om avslutet, ”I Will Always Love You”.

Elvis Presley tyckte om låten och ville sjunga in den. Dolly tyckte det var fantastiskt tills hon fick klart för sig att Elvis policy var att få del av upphovsrättigheterna, oftast 50%. Till slut tackade hon nej:

”I said, ‘I’m really sorry,’ and I cried all night. I mean, it was like the worst thing. You know, it’s like, Oh, my God … Elvis Presley.’ And other people were saying, ‘You’re nuts. It’s Elvis Presley.’ …I said, ‘I can’t do that. Something in my heart says, ‘Don’t do that. And I just didn’t do it… He would have killed it. But anyway, so he didn’t. Then when Whitney [Houston’s version] came out, I made enough money to buy Graceland”

Dolly har investerat sina pengar främst i Dollywood och Pidgeon Forge i Östra Tennessee

“I Will Always Love You” är den enda låt som med samma artist, fått två #1 på samma topplista i två olika decennier. Dolly hade nämligen med låten i filmen ’The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’ som kom 1982 och då kom låten ut som singel och toppade countrylistan i Oktober 1982.

Dolly gjorde också låten som en duett med Vince Gill 1995 (#15 på countrylistan.

Whitney Houston sjöng låten i filmen ”Bodyguard” från 1992. Den låt som skulle vara ledmotivet för filmen, ”What Becomes of the Brokenhearted”, hade valts till en annan film. Kevin Kostner spelade då en cover av Dolly’s låt framfört av Linda Ronstadt för Whitney Houston. Hon insåg potentialen i låten.

Kuriosa:

Ett flygplan för American Airlines gjorde 2013 en nödlandning i Kansas City på grund av att en passagerare spred oro genom att non-stop sjunga ”I Will Always Love You” (och ville inte sluta sjunga).

Endast ett knivöverfall på en sångare i en karaokibar är känt. Sångaren överlevde. (Ingen så kallad ”My Way-killing” alltså)
