Historien bakom låten:
Efter att Willie Nelson skrivit på kontraktet att spela in filmen ’Honeysuckle Rose’ var Willie och filmens producentteam på samma flyg och de frågade om inte Willie kunde skriva en låt att ha med i filmen.
– “What do you want the song to say?’frågade Willie
– “Can it be something about being on the road?” Willies hjärnceller vaknade till liv
– “You mean something like, On the road again, I can’t wait to get on the road again?”
– “That’s sounds great and what’s the melody?”
– “I don’t know yet” sa Willie och skrattade.
Willie kom på några rader text men hade inget att skriva ner texten på men hittade en spypåse / oppkastpose i flygstolens tidningsfack som han skrev refräng och någon vers på.

Även om ”Always on My Mind” och “Crazy” varit stora succéer för Willie som låtskrivare så har ”On the Road Again” blivit odödlig och förknippas med Willie mer än andra av Willies låtar. Många andra artister har gjort covers. Vi kan speciellt nämna:
- Alvin & Chipmunks (1981)
- Keith Almgren ha gjort en svensk text ”Jag ser mig om” som har spelats in av några dansband.
- Den svenska duon First Aid Kit gjorde låten för en reklamfilm för Volvo.
- First Aid Kit har gjort en singel med låten 2020 vars behållning gick till musiker som drabbas under Corona pandemin.
