Låten är för mycket maskulin tyckte Lynn Andersons producent (och äkta man Glenn Sutton) när hon ville sjunga in låten. Han tyckte att det inte passade med «I could promise you things like big diamond rings». Han gav med sig att den möjligen kunde få plats på ett album. Första försöket i studion var inte lyckad men när de försökte i ett snabbare tempo blev alla i studion (inklusive Glenn Sutton) överraskad och bestämde att den ska vara med på albumet. När Columbia Records Daglig leder/VD Clive Davis hörde låten bestämde han att den skulle ut som singel så fort det bara går och inte bara till country utan även pop-marknaden. Joe South fick senare en grammy för ”The Best Country Song” och en grammy för “Song of the Year” in the pop field.
Det blev försäljningssuccé. Singel spelades på radiostationer över hela världen och ”Rose Garden” räknas som en av de 10 största crossover-låtarna i Nordamerika. Lynn hade sin teori om varför låten blev en sådan världshit:
«I believe that ‘Rose Garden’ was released at just the right time. People were trying to recover from the Vietnam years. The message in the song – that if you just take hold of life and go ahead, you can make something out of nothing – people just took to that”.
