Jane Fonda startade ett eget produktionsbolag. För sina filmer sökte hon efter det vardagliga. En av hennes vänner berättade att hon hört om en förening som ville ha medlemmar som jobbar på kontor och som upplevde olika typer av ojämlikhet. Det kan vara kvinnor som får stryka chefens skjortor, åka och tanka eller tvätta bilen etc. Föreningen hette 9to5.
Manuskriptet skrevs med tre damer i huvudrollen. Dolly Parton skrev musiken. Men hon hade ingen skrivmaskin men hon ville ha med det soundet. Hon upptäckte att när hon klickade sina fingrar – med lösnaglar – mot varandra, kunde hon få till ett skrivmaskinsljud.

Det här var den andra singeln av en kvinnlig artist som toppat både countrylistan och den stora gemensamma listan för alla musiktyper, Hot 100 . Den första som gjorde det var Jeannie C. Riley med ”Harper Valley PTA” (1968). Dolly och Kenny Rogers fick samma framgång med singeln ”Island in the Stream”.
Låten har använts i olika TV-program, i reklamfilmer, under valkampanjer förutom försäljning och nedladdning så denna låt bör vara Dollys mest lönsamma efter ”I Will Always Love You”.
