«När jag var ung arbetade jag på en rodeoarena», har Toby skrivit på sin hemsida. «De äldre före detta ryttarna hade hand om djuren och hjälpte till där det behövdes. Några av de gamla var less på att inte kunna vara ute med de andra ryttarna på arenan. Som tröst hade de en whiskeyplunta i bakfickan som de då och då tog en hutt ur och skålade. En av gubbarna hade en speciell ramsa när han skulle skåla ‘Whiskey for my men, beer for my horses«. Jag lade det i minnet och tänkte att en dag ska jag skriva en låt med den titeln.” När den dagen kom så funderade Toby och kom på att det skulle passa med en låt om lag och rättvisa.
När så låten var färdigskriven kom idén att det hade varit kul om Willie Nelson kunde sjunga versen om Texas. Ett lyckat drag, för singeln toppade countrylistan i 6 veckor – längre än vad Toby, Scotty eller Willie toppat listan tidigare (och senare).
